FRX POLYMERS® (FRXP) is the global leader in halogen-free polymeric flame retardant solutions, marketed under the Nofia® brand name. Nofia polymers and oligomers are inherently transparent, high flowing and due to their high phosphorus content, are inherently flame retardant. These environmentally friendly FR solutions are targeted for use in electronics, textiles, building and construction and transportation applications.

After founding the company in 2007, monomer and polymer pilot facilities were built and operated in Chelmsford, MA, USA. This was followed by construction and operation of a pilot plant in Switzerland in 2010. In 2012, the design and construction of a commercial plant, the first of its kind, was initiated in Antwerp and plant was commissioned in mid-December 2013.

FRXP has been globally recognized for its efforts to commercialize this innovative range of materials and has been awarded numerous awards including Frost and Sullivan’s 2008 and 2013 Innovation of the Year Award for Flame Retardant Additive Materials, the 2013 Investment of the Year Award from the Flanders Investment and Trade Agency, and the 2014 EPA Environmental Merit Award. FRXP has been named to the top 3 of Global Cleantech’s 100 list, chosen from 6000 private companies nominated worldwide in 2012 and 2014 and was featured twice on CNN.

In the last few years, FRXP has become a global supplier of this unique flame retardant solution that can be applied to a wide range of plastics. The company’s number of granted patents increased to about 100 and almost 200 patent applications have been filed, toxicological tests have been successfully completed, and products are globally registered. Upon completion of building the first-of-its-kind commercial plant in Antwerp, materials are being exported worldwide to numerous customers. The Antwerp plant was officially inaugurated on August 27th, 2015 in the presence of Flemish Minister President Geert Bourgeois, US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Mark Storella, and Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever.

Nofia FRs are completely unique as they are the first halogen-free large molecule (polymeric) FR additives which means that they will not bleed out of the host plastic over time making them a very safe high value alternative compared to conventional FR additives. They can be used in a wide range of plastics and provide additional properties beyond simple flame retardancy, such as transparency, high heat, excellent electrical properties and improved processing. These attributes allow Nofia products to enable the development of new applications that were not possible with traditional FRs.

FRX Polymers is the first company to commercialize non-halogenated, non-migrating FR materials of low concern to human health and the environment. This technology is based on chemistry that allows the polymerization of a phosphonate monomer into unique oligomeric and polymeric FRs. Compared to halogenated FRs, recently introduced polymeric brominated FRs, and other small molecule phosphorus-based FRs, these polyphosphonates have clear advantages such as being halogen free, not migrating from the host plastic, having a favorable human and aquatic toxicity profile without bioaccumulation, and bringing improved properties to plastics beyond simple flame retardancy in a cost competitive offering.
